On 29 September 2025, the Department of Posts (DoP) signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) to advance sustainable packaging solutions across India Post’s parcel network. With over 1.65 lakh post offices, the postal system is one of the largest logistics providers in the world, and the shift from traditional cloth wraps and corrugated boxes to eco-friendly, lightweight, durable, and scalable packaging materials aims to cut costs and reduce environmental impact.
The MoU provides for benchmarking against global best practices, development of technical standards and pricing models, and capacity building through training modules for postal staff. By combining IIP’s expertise with India Post’s reach, the partnership seeks to create a replicable model for sustainable logistics, while enhancing customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
The collaboration reflects India’s broader push for green logistics and circular economy under missions like Swachh Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat. For policymakers, it highlights the role of public sector organisations in leading eco-friendly innovation, setting market standards, and building consumer trust in sustainable services.
What is the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP)? → A national apex body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, established in 1966, that promotes packaging standards, training, and R&D, with a focus on sustainability and innovation.
