World Bank Funds $212.6M SHORE Project to Protect Tamil Nadu & Karnataka Coastlines
SDG 13: Climate Action | SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Institutions: Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change | Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying
Summary:
The World Bank has approved a USD 212.64 million project β part of its larger SHORE programme, aimed at strengthening coastal resilience in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. This project will help conserve 30,000 hectares of coastal ecosystems through mangrove planting and restoration of sand dunes, reduce plastic pollution, and support about 100,000 coastal community members by enhancing their skills, knowledge, and alternate livelihood options. Around 70,000 people, including many women, will receive training in sustainable tourism and related sectors.
With over one-third of Indiaβs ~11,000 km coastline vulnerable to erosion and extreme climate events, this project ties into climate adaptation, blue economy policy, and coastal livelihood protection. It presents a chance for Indian ministries to strengthen ecosystem-based adaptation, ensure community participation in planning, support regulatory standards for coastal zone management, and link environmental conservation with job creation.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can state and central governments ensure that the SHORE project delivers long-term protection, quality employment, and ecological integrity without displacement or inequity among coastal populations?
