The U.S. will now apply a 15% baseline tariff on most Japanese imports with no additional duty if the existing tariff is already 15% or higherβand maintain sector-specific provisions for autos, aerospace, generic pharmaceuticals, and non-available natural resources. As part of the deal, Japan has committed to a $550 billion investment in the U.S. targeted through jointly selected projects and expanded market access for U.S. goods, including rice, bioethanol, and agricultural products. The agreement, retroactive to 7 August, aims to reduce the trade deficit and strengthen U.S. industry while opening Japanese markets to U.S. exports.
