SDG 16: Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions
Institutions: Ministry of External Affairs
The UN General Assembly, meeting on 2 September 2025, reviewed global peacebuilding progress and reaffirmed the UN80 Initiative as the framework for future reforms. The Initiative was formally adopted in July 2025 (Resolution 79/318) to mark the UNβs eight decades and strengthen its system-wide effectiveness. In September, member states highlighted its application to the peacebuilding agenda.
Delegates stressed that peacebuilding extends beyond post-conflict recovery to conflict prevention, inclusive governance, and sustainable development. Persistent shortfalls in predictable financing for the Peacebuilding Fund were flagged as a core challenge. Several states urged deeper national ownership, participation of women and youth, and regional partnerships.
While achievements since the 2020 review of the Peacebuilding Architecture were noted, speakers warned of uneven implementation and the risks posed by protracted conflicts. The September debate thus placed UN80 at the heart of efforts to sustain peace, linking institutional reform with on-the-ground outcomes.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India, with its experience in post-conflict state-building and inclusive development programmes, shape the UN80 framework to strengthen financing, national ownership, and South-South cooperation in global peacebuilding?
