TDB–DST Supports Development of India’s First 240-Volt Electric Motorcycle Platform
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities | SDG 13: Climate Action
Institutions: Ministry of Science & Technology
The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), has extended support to M/s Raptee Energy Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, for development and commercialization of India’s first 240-volt electric motorcycle platform. The project aims to bring high-voltage architecture, commonly used in electric cars, into the two-wheeler segment, enabling faster charging, better efficiency, and compatibility with the broader charging infrastructure.
To support this, a specialized ARAI-certified battery pack has been designed, and the company has engineered electronics, mechanical systems, embedded software, and diagnostics in-house. The platform also includes smart connectivity features such as remote diagnostics and over-the-air updates, and emphasizes sustainable manufacturing (zero waste, no external emissions).
By backing this innovation, the government signals a push for indigenous EV technology, reinforcing Aatmanirbhar Bharat and aligning with India’s broader push for sustainable mobility and local value addition.
Support from TDB links public R&D financing to strategic mobility transition goals. It helps build domestic high-voltage EV capabilities, reduces import dependence for critical components, and accelerates the ecosystem for advanced electric two-wheelers in India.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How will support for this high-voltage two-wheeler innovation be complemented by incentives, standards, and regulation to scale adoption across states and ensure it delivers emissions, affordability, and supply chain benefits?
