SDG 2: Zero Hunger | SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Institutions: Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare | Government of Tamil Nadu
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare organised the Agricultural Marketing Festival 2025 on 27–28 September at the Nandambakkam Commercial Complex in Chennai. The festival aimed to expand the local market share of agricultural and processed food products, benefiting farmers, producer groups, food processors, and consumers.
The exhibition highlighted Tamil Nadu’s agricultural evolution, biodiversity conservation, organic farming, small grains, and farmer welfare initiatives. Topics in associated seminars included food security, balanced diets, sustainable agriculture, and electronic payments to farmers. A total of 222 exhibition stands were set up, including 168 by agricultural producers, 25 by government agencies, and 29 by private companies.
Participation was significant, with 1,57,592 visitors, 15,420 food items, and 1,42,172 snacks distributed. Food worth Rs. 2.89 crore was supplied to beneficiaries. The food court, operated by self-help groups and enterprises, offered diverse products, reflecting strong consumer interest.
This initiative underscores the role of agri-marketing platforms in strengthening farmer incomes, promoting food processing, and supporting sustainable diets.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can agricultural marketing festivals be scaled across India to integrate smallholder farmers into value chains and boost sustainable consumption?
