SAIL Powers Landmark Railway Connectivity in Northeast India with Bairabi–Sairang Project
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure | SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
Institutions: Ministry of Steel
Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), a Maharatna public sector enterprise has supplied approximately 15,000 metric tons of high-quality steel products for the 51 km Bairabi–Sairang railway project in Mizoram, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 13 September 2025. Of this, 10,000 tons are high-grade R-260 Prime rails from the Bhilai Steel Plant, and the remaining 5,000 tons include plates, TMT, and structural steel sourced from its Bokaro, Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, and Burnpur plants.
This effort underscores SAIL’s role in providing critical infrastructure inputs in Northeast India and reaffirms the government’s push for enhanced regional connectivity and border infrastructure. The project is part of a broader push to link remote regions with national rail networks, fostering economic integration.
By supplying domestically produced steel for vital rail infrastructure, this initiative strengthens public sector contributions to strategic infrastructure, promotes import substitution, and supports regional development. Ensuring quality, timely delivery, and alignment with local needs is essential for infrastructural resilience.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can central and state agencies ensure that public sector companies like SAIL are continually incentivized and held accountable to deliver high-quality inputs for infrastructure, especially in challenging terrains like the Northeast, while maintaining financial sustainability?
