NITI Aayog unveiled a comprehensive report titled “Strategies and Pathways for Accelerating Growth in Pulses towards the Goal of Atmanirbharta”. Released by NITI Aayog Member Prof. Ramesh Chand in the presence of senior officials from MoA&FW, DARE, and ICAR, the report offers a detailed roadmap to fortify India’s pulses sector—critical to food and nutritional security, and the livelihoods of over five crore farmers. It charts a trajectory from the distress of 2015–16 (production at 16.35 million tonnes with 6 MT of imports) to recent gains of 26.06 MT in 2022–23 and lower import dependency at 10.4%. Anchoring on a dual approach - horizontal expansion (bringing fallow or rice‐stubble areas under pulses) and vertical enhancement (boosting yields through improved varieties, seed treatment, and Agri-tech)—the report proposes district-level clustering, One Block–One Seed Village models, FPO facilitation, rigorous climate adaptation, and data-led monitoring. It projects that, with focused execution, India could raise pulse supply to approximately 48.44 MT by 2030 and 63.64 MT by 2047—fueling “Atmanirbharta” in pulses.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: What governance and extension mechanisms will be critical to translating this roadmap, particularly its district clusters and seed-village models into tangible gains in production and farmer incomes?
