National Biodiversity Authority Releases ₹18.3 Lakh to Local Biodiversity Committees in Uttar Pradesh & Sikkim

The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has released ₹18.3 lakh in access-and-benefit-sharing (ABS) payments to two Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), Narrau (Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh) and Lampokhari Lake area, Aritar (Sikkim). These funds will reach local custodians who help protect, manage, and document biodiversity resources.
In Narrau, a commercial entity accessed crop-based resources for fermentable compounds, while in Lampokhari, water and soil microorganisms were utilised for research and innovation. The payments have been made via the respective State Biodiversity Boards, under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and State ABS rules governing commercial use of biological resources.
This follows an earlier, larger tranche of ₹1.36 crore provided to three BMCs in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh (Release ID: 2182001), indicating a positive scale-up of benefit-sharing flows to grassroots governance institutions.
Directing commercial benefits to local communities and BMCs reinforces India’s strategy to make biodiversity conservation economically rewarding, strengthen community-led governance, and advance obligations under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
Which approaches can accelerate transparent and timely ABS disbursals so that more biodiversity-rich villages benefit from India’s growing bio-economy?
