The National Bamboo Mission (NBM), implemented across 24 States and Union Territories, has reported progress in developing infrastructure and expanding bamboo cultivation. As of December 2024, the mission has established 408 nurseries, treated more than 60,000 hectares of non-forest area, and set up 104 preservation units, 528 processing units, and 130 market infrastructure facilities.
NBM operates as a centrally sponsored scheme with a 60:40 funding pattern between Centre and States, and 90:10 in North-Eastern and Himalayan States. Implementation is supported by farmer producer organisations, state-level agencies, and convergence with other government schemes. Monitoring mechanisms include geo-tagging of assets, a management information system (MIS), and third-party evaluations.
Policy measures under the mission include promoting bamboo use in government construction, establishing tools and machinery suited to bamboo processing, and extending credit support through the Agricultural Infrastructure Fund. NBM also supports agarbatti manufacturing and other small-scale bamboo-based industries.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can monitoring mechanisms such as geo-tagging and MIS be used to assess the effectiveness of bamboo sector interventions across States?
