Ministry of Commerce & Industry Launches Global Rice Value-Chain Platform to Unlock ₹1.80 Lakh Crore Markets
SDG 2: Zero Hunger | SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Institutions: Ministry of Commerce & Industry | Department of Commerce
The Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025, scheduled for 30-31 October 2025 in New Delhi, is being positioned by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation (IREF) to unlock ₹1.80 lakh crore in new rice markets and foster ₹25,000 crore in export MoUs.
The event will bring together over 3,000 farmers/FPOs, 2,500 exporters/millers and 1,000+ international buyers from 80+ countries. It will feature a Women-Entrepreneur/SME pavilion, an AgriTech showcase (including India’s first AI-based grain sorter) and state pavilions highlighting GI and specialty rice varieties.
India currently produces around 150 million tonnes of rice in 2024-25 (~28 % of global output) and exported 20.1 million tonnes (USD 12.95 billion) in FY 2024-25 to over 172 countries.
The conference aligns with India’s strategy to strengthen its role in global agri-value chains, enhance export competitiveness, support smallholder and women-led enterprises, and deploy innovation (AI, traceability) in the agrifood sector — in line with the National Food Security Mission, Agriculture Export Policy, and Make in India frameworks.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India convert the MoU commitments into actual export contracts, ensure inclusive value-chain participation (especially of smallholders and women), and embed sustainability/traceability in rice trade?
