Institutions: Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA)
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has unveiled the “Aviation Vision 2047” roadmap for India’s civil aviation sector, as the country aims to become a developed economy by its centenary of independence. The sector currently supports over 7.7 million jobs, and the government envisions increasing the number of airports from 163 in 2025 to 350–400 by 2047.
Under the regional-connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), more than 1.56 crore passengers have flown on 3.23 lakh regional flights, and the scheme has connected 93 aerodromes including heli- and water-airports, and covered remote regions such as the North East, Islands and hilly areas.
Key enabling initiatives include the Digi Yatra digital boarding system (used by over 52.2 million passengers by March 2025), the PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) Scheme for drone manufacturing (₹34.79 crore disbursed in FY 24-25), and the new Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam 2024 to modernise aviation law, streamline licensing, and bolster domestic aircraft manufacturing under “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.
By linking connectivity with economic inclusion, manufacturing and regional development, Aviation Vision 2047 supports India’s infrastructure surge and job creation goals. The move aligns with India’s transport-logistics competitiveness, regional access for underserved regions, and deepening of aviation-manufacturing ecosystems.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How will India ensure that the planned expansion of airports and connectivity also translates into regional-job growth, sustainable operations, and balanced regional development, especially in remote and underserved areas?
