Ministry of Ayush | Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI)
The Ministry of Ayush marked 2025 as a transformative year, elevating traditional healthcare from the margins to the mainstream of India’s health architecture. Key milestones include the laying of the foundation stone for a ₹187 crore state-of-the-art research facility at the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI) in Rohini and the achievement of five Guinness World Records for the ‘Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyaan,’ which surpassed 1.29 crore prakriti assessments.
Global and public health highlights include:
WHO ICD-11 Integration: A dedicated module for Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani was officially introduced in the WHO’s ICD-11 update, enabling systematic global reporting and clinical evidence-gathering.
BIMSTEC Centre of Excellence: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new Centre of Excellence for Traditional Medicine to boost regional research and capacity building.
International Collaboration: A historic MoU on Traditional Medicine Quality Assurance was exchanged between India and Indonesia to standardize safety and efficacy protocols.
Maha Kumbh Outreach: Over 9 lakh pilgrims benefitted from Ayush services at the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh through 20 OPDs and mobile units.
Yoga Mahotsav 2025: Launched the 100-day countdown to the 11th International Day of Yoga with ten new initiatives including Yoga Sangama and Yoga Parks.
What is Prakriti Assessment? It is a fundamental concept in Ayurveda that defines an individual’s unique physical and mental constitution based on the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). By conducting over 1.29 crore assessments under the ‘Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyaan,’ the ministry is building a massive dataset to enable “personalized healthcare” and preventive medicine tailored to individual biological signatures.
Policy Relevance and Future Roadmap
For India’s policy stakeholders, the 2025 review signals a decisive shift toward integrative health solutions where traditional systems are no longer alternative but complementary. The formal inclusion of Ayush systems in the WHO’s ICD-11 framework provides the necessary regulatory and clinical interoperability to scale Indian traditional medicine exports and wellness tourism.
What is to come?
World Homoeopathy Day 2025: A global mega convention in Gandhinagar is expected to host 10,000 delegates, further positioning Gujarat as a global hub for traditional medicine.
Centre of Excellence Expansion: The BIMSTEC-focused research hub will accelerate joint studies in cancer care and specialized traditional treatments across South Asia.
ICD-11 Implementation: National health systems will transition to dual coding (conventional + traditional), enhancing the data-driven validation of Ayush outcomes.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How will the transition to systematic global reporting under the WHO’s ICD-11 framework impact the insurance eligibility and universal coverage of Ayush treatments in India and abroad?
