SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy | SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Institutions: Ministry of Power
In a strategic meeting held on 29 October 2025, the Ministry of Power (MoP) of India and its Nepalese counterpart discussed strengthening bilateral energy cooperation, focusing on regional grid-integration and clean energy trade.
Key outcomes:
Joint Venture & Shareholders Agreements (JV&SHAs) were signed between Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to create two dedicated companies, one in India, and one in Nepal, for implementing large-scale transmission infrastructure.
The two new projects:
A 400 kV double-circuit line connecting Inaruwa (Nepal) ↔ New Purnea (India).
A 400 kV double-circuit line connecting Lamki (Dododhara, Nepal) ↔ Bareilly (India).
These corridors will enable enhanced electricity exchange, bolster grid resilience, support hydropower from Nepal, and contribute to clean-energy integration across the Indo-Nepal border.
The agreement reinforces India’s energy-diplomacy strategy and clean-energy leadership in South Asia. It aligns with initiatives such as the National Electricity Plan, the Green Energy Corridor, and India’s commitments under the SAARC Energy Ring concept. For Nepal it provides access to India’s large grid, enabling export of hydro-electric power and enhancing energy security. Enhanced cross-border infrastructure contributes to regional stability, optimised resource use (hydro + renewable synergy) and supports both nations’ transition toward low-carbon energy futures.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can these cross-border transmission projects be leveraged to expand hydropower–renewable integration, supporting India’s clean-energy goals while enabling Nepal to monetise surplus green power?
