India is set to host the 89th General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from 15-19 September 2025 as announced by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Over 2,000 experts from more than 100 countries will participate. India’s role includes acting as the Global Secretariat for Standardisation in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), a key domain for clean, electrified infrastructure.
The meeting features more than 150 technical and management committee sessions focused on emerging areas such as sustainable development, artificial intelligence, e-mobility, inclusive society through standards, etc. Concurrently, the IEC GM Exhibition will showcase innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics & IT manufacturing, engaging industries, start-ups, and students. BIS is also leveraging this event to promote standardisation awareness among young professionals through internships, workshops, and academia-industry linkages.
Hosting the IEC General Meeting positions India at the global forefront of setting technical standards that will guide clean energy transitions, sustainable tech infrastructure, and product safety. India's leadership in LVDC standardisation has potential implications for regulation, domestic manufacturing priorities, and the alignment of Indian standards with global norms.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can India ensure that standardisation agreements reached in the IEC GM translate into enforceable regulatory norms, and what mechanisms will support local manufacturers in adapting to these global electrotechnical standards?
