SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth | SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Institution: Ministry of Commerce & Industry
At the 16th session of UNCTAD in Geneva, India’s Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, emphasised India’s transformation into one of the world’s fastest-growing large economies (averaging over 7% growth over the past 3 years) and the doubling of its economy roughly every eight years. He highlighted India’s clean-energy credentials—250 GW of installed capacity today and a 500 GW target by 2030—even as India contributes only 3.5% of global emissions while hosting about 17% of the world’s population. The Minister also called for enhanced South-South cooperation, technology transfer, and equitable supply-chain models in the face of rising unilateral trade and environmental measures.
India’s presentation at UNCTAD reaffirms its ambition to shape the global trade agenda through sustainable growth, inclusive development, and partnerships. The link between trade, clean energy, digital infrastructure and manufacturing underscores how India can align domestic “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives with international sustainable development and investment frameworks.
What is UNCTAD? → UNCTAD is a United Nations body created in 1964 to integrate developing countries into the global economy by promoting trade, investment, and sustainable development policies.
