SDG 4: Quality Education | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure
Institutions: Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education has released the India Rankings 2025 under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) framework. IIT Madras maintained its position as the nation’s top overall institution for the seventh consecutive year, while also leading in the engineering category for the tenth straight time. IISc Bengaluru upheld its dominance in the universities and research institutions categories, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi secured its place atop the medical institutions category for the eighth year running. In subject-specific rankings, IIM Ahmedabad remained number one in management, Hindu College topped the colleges list, IIT Roorkee led in architecture & planning, and NLSIU Bengaluru retained its lead in law. IIT Madras also stood out by topping both the innovation and the newly introduced Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) categories—underscoring a growing recognition of educational institutions’ roles in sustainability and social responsibility. Overall, the top 100 ranked institutions included a diverse mix of state universities, deemed and private universities, IITs, NITs, central universities, medical institutions, and research entities.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India leverage the best practices of these consistently high-performing institutions to uplift quality and innovation across emerging universities and colleges -particularly those in underrepresented regions?
