India Marks Three Years of National Logistics Policy: Transforming India’s Supply Chain Ecosystem
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure | SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production
Institutions: Ministry of Commerce & Industry
On 16 September 2025, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) marked the third anniversary of India’s National Logistics Policy (NLP), first launched on 17 September 2022. Over the past three years (2022-25), major reforms under the NLP have improved digital integration, regulatory alignment, infrastructure planning, and skills development. Key to this transformation is the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), which has enabled over 160 crore digital transactions via API integration across more than 30 systems and provided real-time visibility for over 75 million EXIM containers across 101 Inland Container Depots. The LEADS Index has been expanded to include digital and sustainability metrics and aims to improve India’s rank in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index into the top 25 by 2030. Other steps include developing Multi-Modal Logistics Parks, green logistics tools (e.g. Transportation Emissions Measurement Tool), sector-specific logistics policies, State Logistics Policies, and skill programmes in academia and government.
Efficient logistics are crucial for India’s competitiveness, cost of goods, export performance, and supply chain resilience. Continued emphasis on digital-platform integration, multimodal infrastructure, and sustainability can help reduce logistics costs, hasten throughput, and support India’s ambitions under PM GatiShakti.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can states and central agencies deepen the adoption of green logistics, close infrastructure gaps, and ensure smaller operators benefit from digital transformation under the NLP?
