The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has inaugurated its Asia-Pacific Regional Office in Bangkok, hosting its first meeting with partner governments—including India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines—to expand investments that tackle rural poverty, food insecurity, and climate vulnerability across the region.
For India, this development reinforces ongoing collaboration under IFAD-assisted projects, spanning Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Uttarakhand, that support smallholder livelihoods and rural entrepreneurship. The regional office strengthens South-South cooperation and aligns with India’s frameworks for Sustainable Agriculture, Digital Public Infrastructure for Farmers, and Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
India, one of IFAD’s largest programme countries, was represented as a key regional partner, with discussions focusing on scaling climate-resilient agriculture, empowering women and youth in rural enterprises, and leveraging digital innovation in smallholder systems. The new office will enable closer coordination with national agencies and improve project supervision, knowledge exchange, and co-financing for inclusive rural transformation.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
What mechanisms can strengthen state-level coordination and ensure that IFAD’s expanded investments translate into measurable gains in farm productivity, women’s livelihoods, and climate resilience?
