The GST reforms of September 2025 are expected to boost Assam’s economy across traditional and emerging sectors. By lowering tax slabs to 5% on tea, handlooms, tourism services, and GI-tagged farm products, the changes will reduce consumer prices (by ~6–11%), improve competitiveness, and raise rural incomes.
The tea sector, employing nearly 6.84 lakh workers, will see shelf prices fall by ~11%, strengthening Assam’s export edge and supporting orthodox small growers. The handloom and craft sector-with over 12.83 lakh weavers-benefits from 5% GST on items like Muga silk, Gamosa, terracotta, and bamboo crafts, easing costs and widening markets. The tourism industry, which supports 6.51 lakh jobs, gains from cheaper hotels (5% GST on rooms below ₹7,500) and reduced input costs in hospitality. GI products such as Joha rice, Boka Saul, Kaji Nemu, and Tezpur Litchi are now cheaper by 6–11%, enabling stronger demand and farmer incomes.
Assam’s reforms align with the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047, by linking GST rationalisation with regional development, women-led livelihoods, and export competitiveness. For India’s North-East, they also demonstrate how tax reforms can be tuned to promote state-specific cultural and agricultural assets, balancing heritage industries with modern trade.
What is GST Rationalisation? → The process of adjusting tax rates across goods and services to simplify structures, lower distortions, and stimulate consumption. It matters because a leaner GST regime improves affordability for households and competitiveness for MSMEs and exporters.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
Will targeted GST rationalisation in states like Assam create a replicable model for region-specific growth and export competitiveness?
