Institutions: Ministry of Health & Family Welfare
Dr. Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC), led the 11th convocation of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) & Dr. RML Hospital. The event also featured the release of ABVIMS’s annual report. The government reiterated its commitment to achieving a uniform doctor–patient ratio of 1:1,000, as recommended by WHO, and to achieving a balanced UG–PG ratio (1:1) to raise the standard of medical education. Innovations such as integrating skill-based and virtual learning alongside traditional medical instruction were also highlighted. The hospital’s recent NABH accreditation was acknowledged as a mark of quality and safety.
This event underscores the government’s emphasis on scaling and improving medical human resources and institutional quality. Attending to doctor–patient ratios, improving graduate pipelines, and adopting pedagogic innovations are key to enhancing health system capacity and access.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
What policy tweaks such as, licensing norms, faculty incentives, infrastructure investment are needed across states to institutionalize the 1:1000 target and ensure medical education quality is uniform nationwide?
