Government Approves Seven Projects Worth ₹5,532 Crore for Electronics Component Manufacturing
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Institutions: Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY)
The Union Government has announced the approval of the first batch of seven projects under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), marking a major strategic shift toward manufacturing core modules, components, and base materials for the electronics sector. These projects represent a total approved investment of ₹5,532 crore and are projected to generate production worth ₹36,559 crore while creating over 5,100 direct jobs. The approved units are geographically diversified across Tamil Nadu (5), Andhra Pradesh (1), and Madhya Pradesh (1), supporting balanced regional growth.
The program is critical for bridging the domestic demand-supply gap and reducing import dependence. The new plants will ensure that the demand for Copper Clad Laminate (CCL), a base material for circuit boards, is 100% met domestically for the first time. Additionally, they will meet 20% of the domestic demand for Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and 15% of the demand for Camera Module sub-assemblies. The components covered include high-value items such as High-Density Interconnect (HDI) PCBs, Multi-Layer PCBs, and Polypropylene Films, with 60% of the production slated for export, strengthening India’s position in the global supply chain.
The ECMS finalizes the missing link in India’s electronics strategy, complementing the PLI and India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to create a seamless value chain from final devices to base components and materials. This is vital for building trusted supply chains for strategic sectors like defence, telecom, Electric Vehicles (EVs), and renewable energy.
What is the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS)?→ The Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) is a Government of India incentive program designed to attract large investments for manufacturing electronics components, sub-assemblies, and specialized materials like Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and Copper Clad Laminate (CCL). It aims to reduce India’s import dependence on these critical inputs and build domestic capacity for trusted, resilient supply chains, complementing the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for finished products.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How will the government ensure sustained domestic demand for components manufactured under the ECMS scheme to guarantee the long-term viability of the approved projects?
