SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production | SDG 13: Climate Action
Institutions: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the Environment Audit Rules, 2025, aiming to bolster environmental compliance through certified and registered independent audits. The rules address constraints faced by regulatory bodies in manpower and resources, enhancing accountability and transparency while aligning with ease of doing business and trust-based governance.
The rules establish a framework for certification, registration, and performance monitoring of environmental auditors by a designated agency. Auditors will be randomly assigned to projects for impartial evaluation of compliance under multiple environmental laws and regulations, including the Green Credit Rules and waste management legislation.
Expected outcomes include improved environmental performance verification, data-driven governance, strengthened regulatory capacities, and integration of environmental compliance with economic frameworks supporting sustainable development.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India effectively address current challenges such as limited manpower, technological gaps, and coordination issues among regulatory bodies to ensure full implementation and digital integration of the Environment Audit Rules, 2025, for proactive, transparent, and data-driven environmental governance by 2030?
