At the Global Forum on Migration and Development held in Colombia, political cooperation was underscored as essential to ensure migration benefits everyone. The Forum, chaired by Colombia for 2024β25 brought together more than 800 participants across governments, civil society, and international agencies to advocate for policy approaches that treat migration as an opportunity rather than a crisis. The summit spotlighted the global displacement crisis - 83.4 million internally displaced persons at the end of 2024 and promoted sustainable, development-oriented responses rooted in local integration. Colombia emerged as a case study for durable solutions, having recognized nearly 7 million internally displaced individuals, and facilitating their access to assistance and reparations. The dialogue emphasized bridging humanitarian aid with development strategies, integrating migration governance into national planning anchored in human rights and data-driven policymaking.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India shape migration governance frameworks that similarly weave together humanitarian protection, developmental inclusion, and long-term socio-economic integration?
