The Global Food Regulators Summit 2025, hosted by FSSAI under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, concluded with a joint resolve from 70+ countries and international organisations to strengthen collaboration and build inclusive food safety frameworks. The summit featured an Ambassadors’ Conclave on unified regulations, a CEO Conclave on responsible food systems, MSME/startup dialogues, and an FSSAI–WHO masterclass on Codex standards and food risk assessment.
India showcased domestic advances: FSSAI has trained over 3 lakh street food vendors under the Eat Right initiative, developed Ayurveda Aahara regulations, and is expanding digital surveillance tools for food risk management. The event highlighted the role of science, innovation, and harmonised standards in ensuring consumer trust and trade facilitation.
The summit expressed India’s bid to be a global standard-setter in food safety, aligning domestic policies with WHO/Codex benchmarks and supporting export competitiveness. It complements Make in India and PMFME by embedding safety culture across supply chains, from street vendors to large corporates.
What is FSSAI? → The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is the apex regulator for food safety under MoHFW, framing standards, licensing, and monitoring food safety nationwide.
What is Codex Alimentarius? → A global collection of food standards and guidelines developed by FAO and WHO to protect consumer health and promote fair international trade in food.
What is the Ambassadors’ Conclave? → A high-level diplomatic forum held during GFRS where ambassadors and country representatives discussed harmonising food safety regulations, promoting mutual recognition of standards, and reducing barriers to global food trade.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
Can India leverage its leadership through GFRS to shape regional food safety coalitions in Asia and Africa, ensuring regulatory trust that directly boosts export markets?
