Raksha Mantri virtually flagged off ‘Samudra Pradakshina’, India’s first tri-service all-women circumnavigation sailing expedition, from Mumbai. The initiative represents a landmark step in promoting gender inclusion within the armed forces, showcasing the growing role of women in defense and leadership. The voyage will be undertaken on the indigenously designed and built Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni, which highlights India’s progress in defense self-reliance under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The expedition has both national and international significance. On one hand, it will conduct scientific research focusing on marine ecosystems, ocean currents, and the impact of microplastics on biodiversity, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and marine science. On the other, the international port calls planned during the journey will serve as instruments of soft power diplomacy, strengthening India’s cultural ties, defense cooperation, and global visibility.
Overall, the expedition integrates multiple policy priorities: gender equality in defense, innovation and indigenous capability-building, scientific research for sustainability, and international partnerships, aligning with India’s long-term vision of inclusive, self-reliant, and globally engaged growth.
