SDG 2: Zero Hunger | SDG 13: Climate Action

At the G20 Agriculture Working Group meeting in Cape Town, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu urged G20 nations to lead the shift toward agrifood systems that are more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. He warned that existing food systems are particularly vulnerable to climate extremes-droughts, floods, heatwaves-and called for coordinated global action. To hit the goals of zero hunger and climate targets, FAO estimates an investment need of about USD 1.1 trillion annually until 2030 in mitigation and resilience.
FAO’s four key priority areas for G20 leadership are:
Data-Driven Decision Making & Digital Infrastructure — scaling up data systems to guide policies, market access, and monitoring.
Inclusive Investment & Market Access — supporting smallholder farmers, women, youth, and marginalized groups to gain fair access to markets and technology.
Resilience & Risk Management — enhancing capacity to absorb and adapt to climate and other shocks in agrifood systems.
Sustainable Practices & Environmental Integration — aligning agricultural production with ecological restoration, climate mitigation, and biodiversity goals.
Given India’s role as a major agricultural and food system actor, FAO’s agenda aligns closely with national priorities (climate-smart agriculture, food security, rural inclusion). If G20 adopts these priorities, India can leverage them for diplomatic leadership and domestic reform alignment. For example, scaling data infrastructure and resilience financing are already on India’s agenda under schemes such as Digital Agriculture Mission and climate adaptation funding.
