SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Institutions: Ministry of Science & Technology | Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated a Dental Technology Innovation Hub at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS), New Delhi, backed by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) and ICMR. The Hub aims to support research, diagnostics, and therapy in dentistry, reduce dependence on imported dental implants, and enable inclusive participation from start-ups, innovators, and MSMEs. Alongside the inauguration, the government announced plans to increase ~1,000 undergraduate seats and 5,000 postgraduate seats across medical and dental fields. The initiative builds upon policy frameworks such as the National Medical Devices Policy 2023 and existing Medical Devices Rules 2017.
The Hub underscores the push to marry health infrastructure with innovation, enhancing Make in India capabilities in medical devices, reducing import dependency, and strengthening Indiaβs health research capacity. For governance, it signals more institutional convergence (DST + ICMR + medical institutes) and invites public-private collaboration in healthcare tech development.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can the government ensure that innovations emerging from the Hub translate into affordable, scalable products and that output benefits underserved regions and populations?
