The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) marked its 51st Foundation Day with the launch of SAMEER 2.0, a redesigned air quality mobile app. The updated app features personalized alerts, location-based functions, and a modern interface aimed at improving citizen engagement in air quality monitoring. Alongside, CPCB released a technical report titled βClassification of Polluted River Stretches, 2025.β This report identifies and categorizes polluted river stretches across India based on key water quality parameters, providing a scientific basis for prioritizing interventions and compliance action. A companion guidance manual was also unveiled to help regulators and researchers assess freshwater bodies using benthic macroinvertebrates as biological indicators of pollution.
The launch of SAMEER 2.0 strengthens the digital infrastructure for environmental governance, making pollution data more accessible to the public. The new river classification report provides regulators and policymakers with an updated evidence base to target remediation measures and strengthen water pollution enforcement. Together, these tools highlight a shift toward data-driven, participatory environmental regulation in India.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can India integrate CPCBβs updated digital platforms and river classification data into state-level action plans for air and water quality management?
