Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed a long-term Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) to collaborate on advanced shipbuilding projects. This partnership aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the national visions Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
The collaboration will leverage CSL’s infrastructure, including its 310-meter dry dock, and HD KSOE’s technology to build large vessels such as Suezmax tankers and container ships. To support production, CSL plans an 80-acre Block Fabrication Facility in Kochi, with an investment of about ₹3,700 crore, expected to generate 2,000 direct jobs and multiple indirect employment opportunities.
Additionally, CSL signed an MoU with Tamil Nadu’s Guidance agency to develop shipbuilding clusters and propose a ₹15,000 crore greenfield shipyard project that could create 10,000 jobs. These efforts aim to strengthen India’s shipbuilding ecosystem through technology transfer, capacity building, and industry expansion.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India ensure sustainable growth in shipbuilding clusters while maximizing technology transfer and employment under global collaborations?
