SDG 1: No Poverty | SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Institutions: Ministry of Finance | Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
The Government of Canada has launched Build Canada Homes (BCH), a federal agency capitalized with CAD 13 billion, to build affordable, transitional, and supportive housing at scale. BCH will work with provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities to use public lands, modern construction methods (factory-built, modular, mass timber), and flexible financing to accelerate house building. It will also lead efforts including a Canada Rental Protection Fund (CAD 1.5 billion) to preserve at-risk housing and allocate CAD 1 billion to transitional housing for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The agency inherits land assets (including 88 federal properties spanning 463 hectares) and streamlines approvals to cut costs and timelines.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: Could India adopt a similar model, a dedicated housing agency with public land use, modern construction, and targeted financing to address its affordable housing shortage in urban and tribal regions?
