ADB and Papua New Guinea Mark 50 Years of Development Partnership Focused on Connectivity and Inclusive Growth
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Institutions: Ministry of External Affairs | Ministry of Finance
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Papua New Guinea (PNG) marked 50 years of partnership, underscoring the critical role of long-term multilateral engagement in supporting infrastructure and development in Pacific Island economies. Over the past five decades, ADB has financed connectivity projects such as road networks, bridges, and ports, which are essential for linking rural areas with markets and public services. The partnership has also focused on expanding energy access, supporting climate-resilient infrastructure, and enhancing digital connectivity to enable inclusive growth. ADBβs investments have complemented PNGβs national priorities by addressing structural challenges in service delivery, reducing isolation of remote communities, and fostering economic participation.
Looking ahead, both partners are committed to deepening collaboration in areas such as climate resilience, renewable energy, and regional integration, ensuring that development outcomes are sustainable and widely shared. The anniversary highlights how long-term cooperation between multilateral banks and small island economies can shape stronger institutional capacity while advancing development priorities.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can multilateral development banks design future partnerships with small island economies to align infrastructure investment with institutional and climate resilience needs?
