UK Statement at UN: Vote for Resolution Demanding Aid, Hostage Release and Conflict End in Gaza
SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Institutions: Ministry of External Affairs
The UK, via its Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador, voted in favour of a Security Council resolution demanding urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, secure the release of all hostages, and end the conflict ongoing since October 2023. The statement condemns Hamas’ detention of hostages in “unimaginable conditions,” urges that the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) be allowed access, condemns Hamas’ rule, and calls for a ceasefire and lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid. The UK government highlights striking scenes from Gaza, a children’s hospital hit, a man-made hunger crisis, and nearly 65,000 Palestinian lives lost, as proof that the conflict is deepening suffering. While regretting that the UNSC (United Nations Security Council) as a whole could not reach full consensus, the UK reaffirms commitment to a two-state solution and demands an immediate path to end the violence.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: What metrics and mechanisms can ensure that international resolutions translate into meaningful action, in aid delivery, ceasefire enforcement, and safe release of hostages, especially when diplomacy alone has repeatedly delayed outcomes?
