The Inter-Ministerial Group of Ministers (IGoM), chaired by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Lalan Singh, has initiated consultations to frame a comprehensive reform roadmap for Indiaβs fisheries sector. The government has set a target to raise fish productivity from 5 to 7 tonnes per hectare and unlock the export potential of inland states, while strengthening Indiaβs global competitiveness.
Stakeholder deliberations centred on GST rationalisation, single-window clearance, seed banks, quarantine centres, and expanded access to institutional credit. Investments in cold chain infrastructure, traceability systems, and technology integration were highlighted as critical to meeting international quality benchmarks. With over 8 crore livelihoods dependent on fisheries, reforms are expected to create a sustainable and globally competitive ecosystem, supported by flagship schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), PM-Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana, and the Blue Economy initiative.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India integrate inland fisheries into global value chains while ensuring ecological sustainability and equitable access for small fishers?
