The Reserve Bank of India has released the 10th edition of its Handbook of Statistics on Indian States, an annual publication initiated in 2016 to provide a consolidated, comparable statistical resource for India’s states and Union Territories. As noted in the Foreword, the availability of harmonised sub-national data supports regional research, decentralised policy planning, state-wise performance assessment, and broader analyses aligned with India’s cooperative federalism vision and the national goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.
This edition updates all existing data series and substantially expands its scope amidst heightened global uncertainty and renewed trade tensions. A new External Sector section has been added, and 11 new state-wise statistical tables are introduced across multiple domains:
Domestic Tourist Visits (Social & Demographic Indicators)
Net State Value Added – Current Prices (State Domestic Product)
Net State Value Added – Constant Prices (State Domestic Product)
Status of Ground Water Extraction in India (Environment)
Revenue Expenditure (Fiscal)
Capital Receipts (Fiscal)
Market Borrowings of State Governments (Fiscal)
Gender-wise Subscribers of NPS – All Citizen (Fiscal)
Gender-wise Enrolments under Atal Pension Yojana (APY) (Fiscal)
Exports (External Sector)
Foreign Tourist Visits (External Sector)
In this edition, tables sourced from the 2011 Census have been removed, as they have not been updated in recent years. Similarly, State Domestic Product tables based on the 2004–05 base year have been discontinued, as the updated 2011–12 series is regularly published. These discontinued tables remain accessible in the 2023–24 edition.
The Handbook has been prepared by the Regional Economy Monitoring Division (REMD) of the Department of Economic & Policy Research (DEPR) under the supervision of RBI’s Adviser, with contributions from several RBI Regional Offices. It is available on the RBI website, and feedback has been invited for future improvements.
Policy Relevance
The Handbook of Statistics on Indian States is an annual RBI compendium that organises state-wise statistics across demographic, economic, fiscal, environmental, and sectoral indicators—providing a single reference point for researchers, administrators and policymakers working on India’s regional development landscape. It serves as a foundational resource for practitioners who require consistent, comparable state-level data to support decentralised policymaking, state benchmarking, and the assessment of sub-national development patterns.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can governments, researchers, and institutions more effectively use the expanded statistical coverage—particularly the new External Sector and fiscal tables—to strengthen state-level planning, monitoring, and evidence-based policy design?
