Institution: Ministry of Agriculture & Farmersβ Welfare
As of 12 September 2025, the Department of Agriculture & Farmersβ Welfare released data showing the area sown under Kharif crops has increased compared to the same period last year. Overall Kharif area coverage stands at 1,111.30 lakh hectares, up from 1,095.88 lakh hectares in 2024-25; a rise of 14.92 lakh hectares. Key crops contributing to these changes include rice (+8.45 lakh ha), maize (+10.54 lakh ha), coarse cereals broadly (+12.17 lakh ha), while some oilseeds like soybean saw a decrease (-5.81 lakh ha).
These early sowing indicators are crucial for planning procurement, logistics, fertilizer/fuel allocation, monsoon-specific interventions, and anticipating food supply stability. Gains in maize and coarse cereals suggest possible shifts in cropping patterns or farmer responses to incentives, which could affect food security, market prices, and export potential. Declines in certain oilseeds and pulses may require attention via extension services or targeted support.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
What are the drivers behind the increased area under coarse cereals and maize, and how can policy (including subsidies, seed availability, input-provision) ensure that lagging crops (e.g. oilseeds, pulses) are not left behind?
