Prime Minister inaugurated Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and dedicated key urban mobility projects in Mumbai, including the underground Metro Line-3 and the Mumbai One integrated mobility app. These projects, launched under PM-led public infrastructure initiatives, aim to transform Mumbai into a global connectivity hub and ease daily commutes via seamless transit.
The NMIA, India’s largest greenfield airport under PPP, spans 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tons of cargo upon full build-out. It includes features like sustainable aviation fuel facilities, solar power generation (~47 MW), EV bus connectivity, and inter-terminal Automated People Movers (APMs).
Mumbai’s Metro Line-3 (Phase 2B) spans 33.5 km with 27 stations, linking key zones across South Mumbai and enabling travel-time cuts (from 2+ hours to 30–40 minutes). The Mumbai One app enables unified multimodal ticketing across metro, suburban rail, buses, monorail, and other public transport operators. The government also launched the Short-Term Employability Program (STEP) across hundreds of technical training institutions in Maharashtra, focusing on technologies like AI, EV, solar, and drone engineering.
These infrastructure investments are not just about connectivity — they represent a strategic push toward integrated urban mobility, logistics-led economic corridors, and export competitiveness for regional agri- and manufactured goods. The airport’s cargo capacity and transport linkages can reduce export freight costs and catalyse industrial investment around Mumbai.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can subnational governments replicate Mumbai’s multimodal infrastructure model to link mobility, logistics, and skills development in emerging metro regions?
