Employment Indicators Remained Broadly Stable

The June 2026 PLFS shows little change in India’s overall labour market. The Labour Force Participation Rate remained at 54.4%, the Worker Population Ratio at 51.4%, and the Unemployment Rate at 5.5%, indicating continued stability in employment conditions. Compared with June 2025, both participation and employment ratios improved marginally while unemployment remained broadly unchanged.

Urban Participation Improved While Rural Labour Conditions Strengthened

Urban labour market indicators improved modestly during the month, with the urban Labour Force Participation Rate rising to 50.1% and the Worker Population Ratio increasing to 46.8%. Rural unemployment declined slightly to 5.0%, while female labour force participation remained above its level a year earlier despite little month-on-month movement.

These trends suggest incremental improvements rather than major shifts in labour market conditions.

Monthly PLFS Strengthens Labour Market Monitoring

The June bulletin is the fifteenth monthly release under the revised PLFS framework introduced in 2025. Based on responses from over 3.72 lakh individuals, it provides high-frequency evidence on labour force participation, employment and unemployment using the Current Weekly Status (CWS) methodology, enabling policymakers to monitor labour market conditions more frequently than was previously possible.

What is the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS)?

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) is India’s principal labour market survey conducted by the National Statistical Office. Its monthly bulletins provide high-frequency estimates of the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR) and Unemployment Rate (UR) using the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach, allowing regular assessment of employment conditions across rural and urban India.

Policy Relevance

  • Provides monthly evidence for tracking employment, labour force participation and unemployment across rural and urban India.

  • Indicates continued stability in labour market conditions, with modest improvements in urban participation and rural unemployment.

  • Enables closer monitoring of female labour force participation and regional labour market trends.

  • Strengthens the evidence base for employment, skilling and social protection policies through high-frequency labour market statistics.

  • Supports timely economic policymaking by complementing other monthly indicators such as inflation, industrial production and services output.
