The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has released its Global Profiles for Internal Displacement (GPID) report, produced through the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) initiative. As of end-2024, about 83.4 million people were displaced within their own countriesβ73.5 million due to conflict and violence, and 9.8 million due to disasters. In 2023 alone, there were 46.9 million new internal displacement movements, 56% triggered by disasters and 44% by conflict.
The report highlights sharp inequalities: displaced populations are disproportionately children (88%), have lower incomes (93%), and poorer access to services (66%) compared to non-displaced groups. These findings stress the urgency of embedding displacement into national development, social protection, and climate adaptation policies, rather than treating it only as a humanitarian crisis.
