MoPSW Flags Off India’s First Fleet of Heavy EV Trucks with Swappable Batteries at JNPA
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure | SDG 13: Climate Action
Institutions: Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways via Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) launched the first fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks with swappable battery systems at its Nhava Sheva logistics terminal. A battery swapping station was also commissioned. JNPA aims to convert 90% of its 600-truck internal fleet to EVs by December 2026. The maiden batch of 50 trucks was flagged off, with plans to reach 80 trucks by year end.
An MoU was signed between JNPA and Ashoka University’s Isaac Centre for Public Policy (ICPP) to develop a tariff benchmarking framework for ports across cargo types and commodities. The move is part of JNPA’s push for sustainable logistics, reduced emissions, and operational efficiency.
The deployment of EV trucks in port operations signals the integration of clean mobility into logistics infrastructure, aligning with India’s net-zero by 2070 ambition, National Logistics Policy, and the Green Ports initiative. It can set a replicable model for other major ports to adopt low-carbon cargo movement, cutting carbon footprints and operational costs.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can state/port authorities support the scale-up of EV trucks in heavy logistics, through charging/swapping infrastructure, incentives, and integration with regional green corridors?
