SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy | SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Institutions: Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has announced a roadmap to establish complete domestic solar manufacturing capacity by 2028, covering solar cells, ingots, and wafers to reduce import dependence. India has already installed 251.5 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, surpassing half of its 2030 target of 500 GW. The government is expanding key schemes such as PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-KUSUM, and PMSGY. States are being urged to streamline approvals, ensure land and transmission readiness, and adopt single-window clearances. The PLI scheme for high-efficiency solar PV modules has led to new manufacturing capacity, investment, and job creation, reinforcing Indiaβs renewable energy and self-reliance goals.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India align its solar manufacturing policies, regulatory reforms, and state-level implementation to achieve energy security and industrial self-reliance while maintaining affordability and supply chain resilience?
