Institution: Ministry of Commerce & Industry | Ministry of Finance
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry released its Quick Estimates of India’s Foreign Trade for August 2025 on 15 September 2025. Merchandise exports touched US$ 37.42 billion, with engineering goods rising by 4.91% year-on-year to US$ 9.90 billion, and drugs & pharmaceuticals maintaining strong performance at US$ 2.51 billion. The August trade snapshot reflects resilience in high-value sectors despite global uncertainties. Imports were reported at US$ 57.39 billion, leading to a trade deficit of US$ 19.97 billion, slightly narrower than the same period last year.
By tracking export and import dynamics monthly, the Quick Estimates offer policymakers a near-real-time gauge of India’s external sector. Growth in engineering and pharma exports points to competitive strength, while the persistent trade deficit highlights structural challenges in balancing imports. For policy, these figures are essential inputs into trade negotiations, export promotion schemes, logistics investments, and sector-specific support strategies.
