India has been re-elected to both the Council of Administration (CA) and the Postal Operations Council (POC) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during the 28th UPU Congress held in Dubai. The CA handles policy, regulatory, and governance issues, while the POC oversees technical and operational modernization of postal services globally. The re-election signals international confidence in India Post’s reform agenda, especially its digital initiatives like DigiPIN (digital addressing), UPI-enabled cross-border remittances, and e-commerce facilitation via Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras. India also contributes to global capacity building via training for postal officials under South-South cooperation and helps sustain UPU finances through membership contributions and voluntary support.
India’s presence in these key UPU bodies gives it influence over global postal norms and standards, enabling it to align those with its domestic reforms and amplify its soft infrastructure role in global connectivity.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can India use its position in the UPU to set standards that support e-commerce expansion in underserved regions?
