India Outlines Roadmap for Sustainable, Affordable and Safe Mobility to Achieve Viksit Bharat 2047
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 13: Climate Action
Institutions: Ministry of Road Transport & Highways | Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has laid out a comprehensive vision for India’s transport sector, focusing on sustainable, affordable, and safe mobility as part of the Viksit Bharat 2047 ambition. Key priorities include moving toward biofuels to cut crude oil imports and support farmers; maintaining alignment with global emission norms through adoption of BS-VII and CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) regulations; and expanding public transport to provide more comfortable and accessible options. The scrappage policy has been successful, with over 300,000 vehicles scrapped, delivering benefits to industry, environment, and government. Road safety is another central plank: the government proposes behaviour-change campaigns, stronger public participation, and recognises “Rah-Veers” (helpers aiding accident victims), offering them INR 25,000 and insurance coverage of INR 1.5 lakh for accident victims. There’s also a target to bring logistics cost down to single digit by end of year.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India’s transport ministries ensure that the roadmap’s ambitious green fuel, safety, and logistics targets are implemented equitably across states without burdening low-income users?
