India Opens Green Forge Facility to Test GM Crops Under Simulated Environmental Conditions

At the facility’s inauguration, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said AI could eventually support experimentation at Green Forge. The release does not identify an operational AI model, application or implementation timeline, so AI remains a prospective capability rather than a reported feature.

Chamber Results Can Guide—but Not Replace—Field Testing

Controlled experiments can help researchers reproduce environmental conditions, isolate individual variables and screen crop lines before selecting locations for further trials. This could make early-stage research more systematic and repeatable.

Simulation chambers cannot fully reproduce differences in soil, rainfall, pests, surrounding ecosystems and farming practices. Green Forge is therefore best understood as research infrastructure for generating pre-field evidence, rather than as proof that a crop will perform similarly across actual cultivation environments.

Green Forge Is Part of a Wider Biomanufacturing Push

The facility has been established within the BioE3—Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment—initiative, which seeks to connect biotechnology research with manufacturing and commercial applications.

The Government reported that 22 manufacturing hubs and eight specialised biofoundry facilities are being developed for researchers, start-ups and small and medium enterprises, with more than 50 process innovations under scale-up. Green Forge adds specialised crop-testing capacity to this broader research-to-manufacturing ecosystem.

The relevant measure of success is therefore not the facility’s inauguration alone, but whether it produces credible research, shared access and a shorter path from laboratory evidence to responsibly tested agricultural applications.


Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How will BRIC-NABI validate whether crop responses observed inside Green Forge reliably predict performance across India’s varied soils, climates and farming conditions?
