Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal, leading the Indian delegation at the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting in South Africa, showcased India’s leadership in clean energy and climate action. The Minister announced that India achieved its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of 50% non-fossil fuel capacity five years ahead of schedule in 2025 itself. India has also outlined ambitious goals, including aiming to be a global hub for green hydrogen production and achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
India’s Biofuels Programme was highlighted as a major success, having reached 20% ethanol blending, and the country is actively leading the Global Biofuels Alliance. Furthermore, India has notified its Carbon Credit Market, inviting international participation to foster emission reduction and sustainable growth.
The Minister called for climate justice for the Global South, urging G20 cooperation to ensure equitable access to energy and stressing the importance of honoring commitments on climate finance and technology transfer under the Paris Agreement. India also reaffirmed support for Africa’s Mission 300, which aims to electrify 300 million Africans by 2030.
The address solidifies India’s position as a global leader in energy transition policy by emphasizing the dual themes of ambitious domestic clean energy targets and advocating for equitable climate financing and technology transfer for developing nations.
What is the Global Biofuels Alliance? → The Global Biofuels Alliance is an initiative led by India that brings together 32 member countries and 14 international organizations to accelerate the global adoption of biofuels, promoting energy transition, sustainable development, and global cooperation in the sector.
