On January 27, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the third edition of India Energy Week (IEW) 2026, positioning India as the world’s most attractive destination for energy investments. Addressing a global audience of ministers and CEOs, the Prime Minister highlighted that India’s energy demand is expected to double by 2045, necessitating a massive expansion in both traditional and renewable infrastructure. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to a “Just, Orderly, and Equitable” energy transition, ensuring that energy remains affordable and accessible while the nation marches toward its Net Zero 2070 goal.
Strategic Pillars of the Energy Roadmap The Prime Minister and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri outlined a multi-pronged strategy to enhance energy security and sustainability:
Gas-Based Economy: India aims to increase the share of natural gas in its primary energy mix from 6% to 15% by 2030, supported by an investment of USD 67 billion in gas infrastructure.
Biofuels and Green Hydrogen: The successful rollout of E20 (20% ethanol-blended petrol) ahead of schedule and the scaling of the National Green Hydrogen Mission were showcased as key drivers for decarbonizing heavy industry and transport.
Refining and Petrochemicals: India is expanding its refining capacity to 450 MMTPA by 2030 to meet rising domestic demand and position itself as a global exporter of refined products.
Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA): The IEW 2026 emphasized the GBA’s role in creating global standards and supply chains for biofuels, particularly for the benefit of the Global South.
Technology and Innovation Showcase IEW 2026 features over 900 exhibitors from 120 countries, focusing on cutting-edge technologies like Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), advanced battery storage, and small modular reactors. The event serves as a platform for “Action over Talk,” where international partnerships are being formalized to accelerate the deployment of low-carbon technologies at a population scale.
What is India Energy Week? India Energy Week is the country’s flagship global energy platform, bringing together government leaders, industry executives and innovators to accelerate progress toward a secure, sustainable and affordable energy future. As a neutral international forum, IEW drives investment, policy alignment and technological collaboration shaping the global energy landscape.
Policy Relevance
The India Energy Week 2026 serves as a strategic catalyst for mobilizing the estimated USD 300-400 billion required for India’s green energy shift.
Investment Attraction: By showcasing reform-led growth and regulatory predictability, IEW helps de-risk the Indian energy sector for global institutional investors and sovereign wealth funds.
Strategic Autonomy: The focus on indigenous manufacturing of solar modules, wind turbines, and electrolyzers supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, reducing dependence on volatile global supply chains.
Energy Security: The integration of traditional hydrocarbons with biofuels and green hydrogen ensures a diversified and resilient energy basket that can withstand geopolitical shocks.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India further streamline its “Single Window Clearance” system to ensure that the multi-billion dollar investments pledged at IEW 2026 translate into operational projects within the current 2024-2029 policy cycle?
