SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Institutions: Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
The Government of India, via the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has accelerated its National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) with a new ₹100 crore Call for Proposals to support start-ups developing hydrogen technologies including production, storage, transport and utilization. Under NGHM’s R&D scheme, 23 projects have already been awarded in Round 1 involving biomass and non-biomass hydrogen production, safety integration, and hydrogen applications. The mission has also launched pilot projects at ports, shipping, transport, and steel sectors, and has begun using instruments like the Green Hydrogen Standard & Certification scheme, testing facilities, and regulatory waivers to build the ecosystem. Crucially, India aims by 2030 to achieve five million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production annually, 125 GW of new renewable capacity, CO₂ reductions of 50 million tonnes annually, and creation of six lakh (600,000) new jobs.
This initiative ties India’s climate strategy (net-zero aspirations) with industrial growth, clean energy leadership and employment generation. It underscores the need for policy consistency, around renewable energy capacity expansion, infrastructure (electrolysis, transport), regulatory clarity (certification, waivers), and financing mechanisms to ensure that the green hydrogen economy scales across states.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India ensure the green hydrogen value chain is resilient, cost-competitive, and inclusive, especially benefiting startups, port & industrial regions, and not just large incumbents?
