The 56th edition of India’s premier film festival, IFFI (International Film Festival of India) 2025, will be held in Goa from 20-28 November, showcasing more than 240 films from 81 countries, including 13 world premieres, 5 international premieres and 44 Asian premieres. Film-makers from women and new talent stand out in this edition, with more than 50 women directors’ works selected. The festival’s thematic sections include Docu-Montage, Rising Stars, Mission LiFE, Experimental Films and more, signalling an expanded scope beyond conventional features.
A special focus on Japan (Country of Focus), Spain (Partner Country) and Australia (Spotlight Country) underlines the global collaborative thrust. The curtain-raiser held in New Delhi also flagged that the festival will honour veteran actor Rajinikanth for 50 years in cinema, showcase restored classics tied to upcoming centenaries, and introduce “IFFIesta” — a cultural-festival arm merging film, food, art and entertainment to engage youth and local communities.
The ministry further emphasised that anti-piracy measures will be strengthened and steps to simplify film-certification processes are underway, while recognising the role of generative AI as a creative tool in storytelling.
IFFI 2025 serves as a strategic platform for India’s cultural diplomacy and creative-economy agenda. By emphasising inclusivity (women directors, new talent, diverse geographies) and digital-technological innovation (AI companions, anti-piracy frameworks), the festival aligns with broader objectives of building a globally competitive Indian media-industry, boosting film-tourism in Goa and harnessing creative clusters for urban and regional growth.
What is IFFI? → The International Film Festival of India is an annual event showcasing global cinema and promoting Indian creative content, institutional collaborations, co-production markets and cultural exchange.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How will India ensure that the innovation and inclusivity goals of IFFI 2025 translate into sustained policy outcomes—such as industry growth, regional creative hubs, equitable opportunity for women film-makers, and stronger export of Indian content?
