ndigenous Technology Targets India's Growing Plant-Based Protein Industry
The Technology Development Board (TDB) has extended financial assistance to establish a commercial-scale facility for manufacturing Functional Soya Protein Concentrate (FSPC) and Textured Soya Protein Concentrate (TSPC)using technology developed entirely within India.
Unlike conventional manufacturing processes that rely on imported Soya Protein Isolate (SPI), the indigenous process uses domestically produced Soya Protein Concentrate (SPC) while achieving comparable functional performance. The innovation is expected to reduce production costs, improve competitiveness and strengthen India's capability in high-value food ingredient manufacturing.
Technology Commercialisation Supports Import Substitution and Value Addition
The project aligns with the Government's broader strategy of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by converting indigenous researchinto commercially viable technologies. Besides reducing dependence on imported protein ingredients, the initiative aims to strengthen domestic supply chains for non-GMO soybeans, support food manufacturers with affordable raw materials and create new export opportunities in the rapidly expanding global market for plant-based nutrition.
The project also contributes to agricultural value addition by enabling farmers and processors to move beyond primary commodity production towards high-value food ingredients with greater export potential.
What are Functional and Textured Soya Protein Concentrates?
Functional Soya Protein Concentrates (FSPC) are plant-protein ingredients that improve texture, water retention and nutritional quality in processed foods. Textured Soya Protein Concentrates (TSPC) are processed to mimic the texture of meat and are widely used in plant-based meat products, nutritional supplements and other high-protein food applications.
Policy Relevance
Technology Commercialisation: Demonstrates how public funding can help translate indigenous research into commercial manufacturing.
Atmanirbhar Bharat: Reduces dependence on imported protein ingredients through domestic technological capability.
Value Addition in Agriculture: Expands opportunities for processing non-GMO soybeans into high-value food products.
Food Processing Competitiveness: Strengthens India's capacity in the rapidly growing global market for plant-based proteins.
Export-Oriented Manufacturing: Supports the development of globally competitive food ingredients while enhancing foreign exchange earnings.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India accelerate the commercialisation of indigenous food-processing technologies to strengthen agricultural value chains and expand its share in the global plant-based protein market?
